We are happy to invite you to the latest initiative from SPM – the founding meeting of a new erfa-group called Structural simulations of mechanical systems.

Statement of purpose for the SPM group Structural simulations of mechanical systems

The name of the SPM group is SPM erfa-group 22 – Structural simulations of mechanical systems

The group will have a similar structure to the other SPM groups:

  • First point on the meeting agenda is to choose the host and date for next meeting
  • The host for the coming meeting will do minutes of meeting of the current meeting, and will be responsible for topic, agenda and possible speakers at the coming meeting
  • Invitations to meetings will be handled by SPM

The group will focus on structural simulations of mechanical systems and their multiphysical aspects. Some examples of topics and models are listed below:

  • 1D
  • Matlab/Simulink
  • FEA
  • Stress, strain, fatigue, materials
  • Acoustics, vibrations, modal analysis
  • Thermal simulations
  • FEA coupled
  • FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction)
  • Thermal and structural
  • Magnetic and structural
  • Optimization related
  • Parametric optimization
  • Topology optimization
  • Cost optimization
  • Robustness
  • DoE
  • Material models
  • Generation and verification
  • Assembly and manufacturing processes

The group does not have any preferences regarding software.

Experiences and results presented in the group shall preferably be backed by experimental results and furthermore be based on concrete and well-defined cases. Examples could be:

  • Lifetime model in Comsol Multiphysics, including wear and creep
  • Mechanical and thermal MatLab/Simulink/Simscape model made for system designs and ”Virtual experiments”
  • Development of rubber model, including hyper elasticity, swelling, memory and temperature effects, and utilization of the model to predict leaks through fluid pressure penetration in ANSYS
  • Simulation of welding processes (slow or fast) on circular parts with the intent to analyse temperature, deformation and stress levels regions a distance away from the weld bed
  • Development of improved failure criteria for non-linear analyses; ‘yield’ is too conservative, but ‘fracture’ is challenging to define
  • Variation based structural analyses. Simulations are mostly done on nominal geometry and developing methods for combining analyses with e.g. DoE and Monte Carlo will enable analysis of the full sample space.
  • Development of pressure dependent friction properties. At high surface pressure, friction drops. Understanding of this phenomenon is limited and creates inaccuracies in simulation models.

Externals (suppliers, institutes, academia etc.) are invited when relevant to share knowledge and experience within specific fields. The host is responsible for these invitations.

Typical meetings will be divided into two parts:

  • Common session with presentations according to the agenda
  • Break out session with individual specific workshops/forums

The group will focus on close collaboration with academia, and will aim to have universities represented at each meeting if possible.
